HKFO 2016: The Premières
The Passion of the Earth

STRAVINSKY: Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring), a production for dance and orchestra
TCHAIKOVSKY (ARR. LI): Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, “Pathétique“, for orchestra, choir and dance

Having visited the premières of the present, HKFO also seeks to remind its audience of the monumental premières of the past. In HKFO2016: The Premières – The Passion of the Earth, HKFO brings back to life Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a composition probably best-known for its première – a work so ahead of its time and full of originality in its music and choreography that allegedly sparked riots amongst Parisian audiences.

A work that explores the powerful idea of sacrifice, death and religion as a girl dances to her death as tribute to honour the pagan god of Spring, HKFO seeks to deliver a unique experience as we work for the first time with Hong Kong’s young and brightest dancers and choreographers, delivering the work in novel ways none has experienced before.

The concert closes with nothing other than Stravinsky’s childhood inspiration – Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique“. An immensely popular work in its own right, the piece has also been for years the subject of inspiration for composers and choreographers.

Dubbed as Tchaikovsky’s “Requiem”, or his own musical suicide note, scholars have viewed Pathétique as a work that explores Tchaikovsky’s own ideas of sacrifice, death and religion as he analogises himself crucified in his own music, much like Jesus Christ did on the cross, as the ultimate punishment for his forbidden love.

HKFO shall bring to life this popular symphony on commission choreographed by Hong Kong’s top talents with a special arrangement for orchestra, choir and dancers in the finale.
