Gip Chan

Percussion

Gip Chan was awarded the First Prize in the Italy Percussion Competition from Italy Percussive Art Society (IPAS). As seen on Rhythm Scene(USA), DrumSet MAG(Italy), Drum Club(Italy), Percussion Creativ, off-beat Magszine(German) and appear on the cover page in both SCMP - Young Post and the “UpKnowledge” magazine.

Born in Hong Kong, Gip is a keen and enthusiastic player in various ensembles and orchestras, performed throughout Europe and Asia. Appeared with Hong Kong Philharmonic, Macao Orchestra, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Global Symphony Orchestra, SAR Philharmonic, The Learners Orchestra, Asian Chamber Orchestra, Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong. He is was the former principle timpanist of the HKBU Symphony Orchestra, percussionist of HKBU Wind Symphony, HKBU Percussion Ensemble and Hong Kong Young Musicians' Wind Orchestra.

Chan is the percussion faculty at Yip's Children's Choral & Performing Arts Centre and Hong Kong Festival Orchestra - School of Music. He has been giving percussion ensembles and marching drumline coachings, group classes and private lessons in various school such as New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School, Pui Ching Primary School, Heep Yunn primary school etc.

In 2015, Chan was invited to be one of the coaches, given lessons and organized concert - "Dear Dream" in Korea, Cheongsong Cultural Centre. Acclaim from Cheongsong county mayor. In November, he was invited again to Korea, performed in Cheongsong Apple Festival.

Besides, Chan also devoted himself to marching band music. He has been awarded with the level 6 achievement from DCI (Taiwan) Marching Academy. For rudimental drumming and marching band music, he had token lesson with Mr. Naoki Ishikawa, a renowned rudiment snare drum soloist. He is currently studying marching percussion with Mr. Steve Ulicny, a judge from the Drum Corps International (DCI). In 2011-2013, Chan was the center snare drummer of The Pegasus Vanguard.

Chan received the Talent Development Scholarship awarded by the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme in both 2014 and 2015; he had also received the Modern Academy 2015 Scholarship awarded by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. At HKBU he had studied percussion with Ms. Sophia Woo and timpani with Mr. Lap-Tak Choy. Chan had also token lesson from David Herbert, Thomas Burritt, Ted Atkatz, Casey Cangelosi, Aiyun Huang, Joe Porter, Aziz D. Barnard Luce, Rieko Koyama.
