Hui Ling

Born in Beijing, Hui started studying piano at the age of 3 in a musical family and received her early musical training at the secondary school of the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music.  After completing the Professional Diploma with high distinction at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 1990, she was introduced by the former music director of San Francisco Ballet Mr. Denis de Coteau, entered the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) where she obtained Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in four years with full scholarship.  Hui has won many prizes including the Rolex Performance Award in Singapore and the concerto competition in SFCM. 

As a soloist, she has performed with many orchestras, such as the Sierra Community Orchestra, Santa Rosa Symphony and Marin Symphony in California as well as Queensland Youth Orchestra in Australia.  In 1991, she appeared as the featured artist in the San Luis Obispo (California) Mozart Festival, invited by Mr. Jeffrey Kahane, who is the music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.  She was also the resident pianist for the Lancaster Festival in Ohio for five years where she performed twice with the renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker in piano duo recitals and four-piano extravaganza concerts.

In 2000, she formed the HK Duo with pianist Julie Kuok. Since their highly successful debut, the HK Duo has staged regular recitals in Hong Kong and overseas.  She also arranged the “Romeo and Juliet” Suite for piano duet, and the “Firebird” Suite for two pianos.

Hui has been teaching at the HKAPA since 1994 and is currently teaching at the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  She has given many solo and chamber recitals, performances for radio and television programmes, lectures and masterclasses. She has also served on the jury for local and international piano competitions.  Her piano teachers include Yang Jingchuan, Li Qifong, Yin Chengzong, John Winther and Mack McCray.

Tuition Fees: HK$1200 / session (2 hours)

Focusing on examination techniques in preparation for the ABRSM Grade 8 examination, classes are orgainsed in groups of 4 students to learn from the best while observing their peers. 

*Audition for joining this class is required. Interested candidates should make a short video recording of the candidates' own piano playing for any repertoire for at least 5 minutes, and submit by email to school@hkfo.orgfor assessment.
